VIDEO: Underpainting in Grayscale for Depth and Dimension

Hello! Today, we are doing some more Copic Coloring. Kelly has a couple of new stamp sets out with Picket Fence Studios and I was super excited to use Sweet Holiday!

There are two cupcakes included in this set, both are pre-decorated for you and make it super easy to just stamp and start coloring right away. I chose to go with the “all occasion” cupcake, but still gave it a holiday spin by adding a few of the additional images included in the set. I didn’t want to distract from the gorgeous cupcake, so I opted for a clear sparkly background using texture paste and the Inner Glow A2 Stencil.

In the video, I share an easy way to add depth and dimension to your images by underpainting with a couple of gray markers before adding your color. This is super helpful when you’re doing no-line coloring too since it maps out the image and helps to clearly define the different areas of the image.

I ended up coloring the image 3 times. For two of them, I colored the image in the same colors. I took what I loved from the first and applied it to my second attempt, and then made adjustments for the areas that I wasn’t as happy with.

The third card features the first cupcake that I colored. I was practicing and just getting to know the image and figuring out my color combos. I wanted to experiment with a translucent cupcake wrapper and green Helebores. Although it wasn’t my favorite, it wasn’t horrible, and I still turned it into a finished card.

For all three of my cards today I used the Another Joyeux Noel stamp and dies for the sentiments. I really love how well these sets paired together!

I hope that you enjoyed today’s projects! As always, thanks for dropping by!
