Jumping in with Mixed Media
I’ve said recently that I’ve been “dipping my toes” into the mixed media realm. Well, I think I’ve officially jumped into the deep end! I may not be doing much more than treading water at this point, but I’m learning so much and having a great time. You can’t really become proficient at anything without practice, right?
There’s a lot going on on this card, but I still think it all works in the most delightful way!
When I started this background, my goal was to experiment and learn. I knew I wanted to use several mediums and techniques in an effort to familiarize myself with how they would play together and layer. I’m going to do my best to list the specific colors and products used at the end of this post, but forgive me if I miss a few. I did not keep track and just kept grabbing this and trying that. I normally give a detailed breakdown of everything, but due to the aforementioned, I’m going to hit the “highlights” on this one. I hope you’ll forgive me.
I used our Joyful Poinsettia stamp set to do a bit of watercoloring stamping. I inked it up with Distress Oxide Inks in Festive Berries, spritzed it with water and stamped it onto mixed media paper on the top left and again on the bottom right and dried it. I added some ink smooshing using Weathered Wood Oxide ink and a littles more watercolor stamping using our Wood Planks stamp set, lightly and unevenly inked with Vintage Photo Oxide Ink.
I used Finnabair Paper Paste through a stencil for texture along with Distress Crackle Paste on the edges and corners through another stencil. To blend them in with the background, I added another layer of watermarking using Weathered Wood Distress Oxide. To enhance the crackle texture, I rubbed a little Iced Spruce and Barn Door Distress Crayons over the crackle paste.
I wanted to try a little layering using different papers and textures. I tore some vintage book paper and vellum, and another inked panel that I stamped my sentiment on using Joyful Poinsettia in Wplus9 Nautical Navy ink. l used my sewing machine to sew all of the layers together.
All of the ephemera was created during a recent Live in our Facebook Group. So it was easy to look through my little “stash” and pick out som elements to group together. I used the Spring Wreath Die embellished with glitter and WOW! Perissa embossing powder to encase the sentiment. I added a few glittered snowflakes from our Snowflake Trio Die and a deer from our Stag Trio Die. I love taking a crafting session during the holidays to create a bunch of ephemera that I can pull from when creating these special one-of-a-kind cards.
You’ll notice I added a little distressing to the edges of my layers and physically roughed them up a bit. The addition of gold thread ties in the metallic splatters running throughout the rest of the design. Now, I’m just hoping the book page doesn’t say something untoward! This is actually one of the main reasons I chose to cover it with vellum. You can order a stack of vintage pages from Etsy, if you do’t have any books you can (or want) to use, you can also stamp your own with a text stamp. The only problem with ordering them is, you get what you get. LOL
I’ve done my best to list all of the supplies below, but honestly, any substitutions would work here. Thanks for stopping by! I hope you were able to find some inspiration.
