VIDEO: How to Create Gorgeous Patterns With Die Cuts
Hello, friends. Today is all about creating patterns! Normally, when we think about patterns, we think of stamping patterns. But today, the focus is on how to create gorgeous patterns using your die cuts + some tips on hot foiling. In the video below I share 4 cards that all start from the same base pattern. I share how with a few color swaps and element additions, you can create a ton of unique patterns.
This journey started out tropical, but in a very subdued and more sophisticated color palette – my comfort zone of color. I used the Spellbinders Typing Class die (which is on sale for half off as I’m typing this!) for the base pattern of all of today’s cards. The florals included in this die are large, versatile, and timeless. That Monstera leaf…be still my heart. I also made sure to use gold cardstock in all of my patterns to tie in the sentiments, which I had already decided on gold hot foiling. And the Spellbinders All Occasion Mailbox Greetings hot foil plate was perfect.
Once I had created the pattern for my first card, I just duplicated it. I picked it up with Press and Seal and adhered it to a gray A2 card base this time. I just love a good comparison between a dark and light version of the same design! The light background gives it a bright and airy look, while the navy really brings the drama.
From here, I decided to get brave and pump up the color. Concord & 9th has a really beautiful color collection, and these particular colors paired together really sing! In fact they were really hard to photograph because they elevate each other so much that they were coming off “hot”. But man, do they look amazing together in real life! Just for something a little different, I went with a Slimline card base this time, and the pattern worked equally as well.
I surprised myself and was really crushing on this vibrant tropical vibe that I had going and decided to create another one.
How freaking adorable is that? I pulled out the Spellbinders Little Chickadee and Sweet Birdie dies and worked them into my pattern this time. Although these aren’t your typical “tropical” birds, I think the style of the die brings the same vibe when using these bright colors? What do you think?
Remember, if you want all of the details and some pointers on my design process, be sure to watch the video. I always try to give you guys “the what, the how, and the why” behind every card and the decisions I make along the way. WHAT we’re going to do, HOW we’re going to do it, and WHY we’re doing it – this way you can apply that knowledge to other projects and creative endeavors!
As always, thanks for dropping in. I hope you have a wonderfully creative day!
