VIDEO: Copy And Selectively Edit

Hello friends! Today we are taking a look at one way to CASE a card, without directly copying it. We all share our ideas freely to inspire each other. But I often hear the question “how do I use a design for inspiration, without copying it?” First, let me say that it is 100% OK with me if you copy my cards. I put them out here to inspire you and show you how to use all of the wonderful products on the market. But, some people feel differently. It is always a good idea to give credit back to the person who inspired your creation. Eventually, you’ll become confident and experienced and will find yourself relying on CASEing less often, and others will be CASEing you. Or, if you just feel uncomfortable CASEing someone else, CASE yourself!

Case in point – I created a card LIVE in our Facebook group a couple of weeks ago, and really liked several things about the overall layout. So I decided to carry over the concepts to another card while swapping out some of the elements. Ultimately, I ended up with four new cards that I love even more than the inspiration! I go over the entire process in the video below, so be sure to check it out.

It’s hard to believe that the whole lot of cards all started with the car below as inspiration. I go over all of the elements in the video and my design choices in detail. Sometimes creating on the fly, and under a time constraint, as I do when creating LIVE, pushes me to just make a decision and create. Sometimes I’m happy with the finished product, sometimes it’s just a rough draft that needs refining, and sometimes it opens up the flood gates to multiple ideas.

Thinking of you card featuring Spellbinders by Dawn Wolelsagle.

Here’s a look at the resulting finished cards from the creative session. I was really itching to use the Lovely Layers: Slice and Stump Die from Honey Bee and knew the Garden Builder Dies from Spellbinders would pair perfectly with it. All of the finished cards use the same basic products and links can be found in the supply list below.

For the fist card, I kept the same color palette.

From there I kept things relatively the same, but decided to swap the pinks – more of the darker pink with less of the lighter pink.

That got me thinking about swapping out the main color altogether. I also decided to tighten up the focal point and make it a little smaller. The purple led to swapping out one of the greens for a more yellow toned green for some of the leaves as well.

And finally, I decided to go really unexpected and try a color that I’ve never utilized as a main color.

And surprisingly, it works! I swapped the gold foil for holographic foil. And then added some aqua leaves and iridescent gems to pick up the one the colors in the foil.

I hope you enjoyed today’s video. As always, thanks for dropping in!

Hi Dawn- I’ve always loved your work, in many mediums! I’m a crafter who doesn’t like to Case but definitely draw inspiration from my favorite artists.
I have a question about your video. I’ve hot foiled and admit, it can be frustrating at times. But, I love the look. —
When you erased the over foiling on your Dahlia cardstock, I noticed you erased the entire area. Did the rectangle die also emboss so you didn’t erase all of the foiled area? I didn’t think you could erase just the over foiling, without running the risk of erasing the foiling you want to stay on the card front.
Thx for your help and for an awesome blog post!
