The EASIEST Way to “Watercolor” Die Cuts
Hey Friends! I’m way behind on sharing here. I’ve had several videos go up on YouTube and am just now getting a chance to add them here. I know some of you prefer to go straight to YouTube and some of you check here. So, I’ll be working on bringing the blog up to date on all of the fun inspiration – in no particular order.
Today’s project is one of the easiest ways to get that watercolor look with your die cuts. It’s quick, easy, and relatively mess free!
I seriously love this method so much and have already made several more cards using this technique. It’s really is almost fool proof. With spring on it’s way (and pretty much here in Florida), I just had pull out my Lovely Layers florals and birds from Honey Bee Stamps.
I paired some old favorites with some newer products to create a little scene of a bird with it’s nest, surrounded by wildflowers in front of a window frame. The window could easily be transformed into a trellis as well.
The window is a die from the new Blooming View set by Kelly Taylor. I felt like it was perfect to anchor my little bird. For the background, I wanted to add some interest without being to busy or distracting. I decided to go with a little stencil “stamping” using the new Vintage Flourish stencil. I inked up the back side of the stencil with Pumice Stone Oxide Ink, sprayed it with water and then stamped it onto watercolor cardstock. SO easy!
I used several Lovely Layers dies for the florals, greenery, bird and nest – I’ll have them all linked in the supply list below. But, they were all inked and colored using the same technique. I inked them and then sprayed them with water. Be sure to check out the video to see how easy it really is! To finish off the card, I added a sweet sentiment from the new Lean On Each Other stamp set and cut it out using the coordinating die.
If you love the Lovely Layers dies as much as I do, be sure to check out the sale Honey Bee is running. It’s the last day (March 17th) to use the code SPRING20 to get 20% off of the Hello Spring Sale category – and the Lovely Layers Wildflowers and Distress Inks are included.
Thanks so much for stopping by. I hope that you enjoyed today’s project and that you give it a try!

Dawn, this technique is brilliant! I tried it today and it worked beautifully. Needs a bit of practice, not nearly as pretty as yours, but I love it. Thanks so much!

Thanks for this information, but for me it would have been easier to follow if you’d have done a video of you actually doing what you want us to do. I’m a show me person. So I really didn’t get much out of what you sent. Sorry.

Hi Edna! There is a video in this post. I’m pretty sure I covered everything for the technique in it. But, if you let me know specifically what you were looking for, I’d love to help you out! 🙂

I appoligize for saying I would have liked a video. After you said there was one, I went back and found it fir the easiest way to watercolor die cuts and love it. It makes a lot of sense when watching you do it. Thanks again.
