Sweet Watercolored Storybook Scene + A Sale

I love all styles and mediums for creating, but watercolor is definitely my soul mate. The little critters in our Forest Friends set are just perfect for that soft storybook style of watercolor. And the set includes all of the pieces needed to create a fun little scene!

How sweet is that? I stamped the tree, the raccoon, bees and mushroom images in Antique Linen Distress Ink on a panel of Fabriano Artistico cold pressed watercolor paper. Antique Linen is still my goto for no-line watercoloring, especially for the “storybook” look. On a separate piece of watercolor paper I stamped the bears and other images. I wanted a nice white border so I taped down my background panel around the edges using painters tape and pulled out my Mungyo watercolor palette. But any watercolors you have on hand will work fine.

I feel like this style is perfect for beginning watercolorists. It’s not too loose and not overly detailed either. I work in two to three layers for this style, very similarly to how we color with Copics. I start with a light wash of color, add a darker shade to the shaded areas and blend out with a damp brush, then add in my darkest shadows.

I started by painting the tree, raccoon and other elements stamped directly on the background panel. Once the were dry, I added in my ground and sky. I used a quick blue background wash for the sky and and let it dry. Then I came in with a light loose wash of green moving up into the sky in some areas to create some depth with bushes or trees in the distance. Again, I let that dry and then came in with a darker green for the foreground. I use a little dry brush technique to emulate grass and texture.

I painted the rest of the elements that I had stamped on the separate piece of watercolor paper and die cut them using the companion die. I arranged the die cut pieces on top of the background creating a cute little scene. Gah! I just love this set. All that was left was the sentiment. I chose to stamp it directly on the background in Wplus9 Black ink.
