How To: Hexagon Gatefold Die

Gatefold cards are a fun way to add a little extra “wow” to a card design. The new Hexagon Gatefold Die takes it a step further by adding a fun interlocking element.

In today’s video I share some tips and tricks for using this die as well as three card examples. Be sure to watch as this is another “easier to show than tell” technique. The video focuses on using the die and I briefly go over the cards I created, but I wanted to share some more detailed information on each card here as well.

Featured Supplies: Hexagon Gatefold and Welcome dies and New Home stamp set.

This card is very clean with a modern feel. I used the Hexagon Gatefold Die to cut my card base from white card stock. I wanted to keep the colors clean and crisp, so I chose a bright green, black and white. I used the hexagon label from the Welcome Die and cut it once from the green and again from white. The hexagon label in this die set is the exact same size as the hexagon closure created by the Hexagon Gatefold Die, making it a great addition to further expand your design options.

I stamped the “New Home” sentiment from the New Home stamp set onto the white label and added “congrats on your” heat embossed in white on black just above it. I adhered the label to the front of the card and added a matching green house, also from the Welcome Die. To finish the card off, I adhered the green trim piece to the top.

Next up, another clean design, but slightly elevated.

The gatefold design is perfect for creating a color blocked or split design look. Here, I decided to go with a bold patterned paper on one side and a clean crisp white on the other. After creating my base, I die cut one side of the Hexagon Gatefold Die from patterned paper and adhered it over one side.

For the front, I die cut the hexagon label and the word “thanks” from white card stock several times. I adhered the “thanks” die cuts one on top of the other and colored the top one with Wplus9 PURE COLOR dye ink in Warm Wool.

“For Your Kindness” was heat embossed in white on Gina K. Designs Peach Bellini card stock and adhered with foam tape. I added the entire stacked label to the front. Having a little extra depth creates a lip that helps “latch” the card closed.

My last card today steps it up even more. It is definitely a little more fussy, but the angles of the hexagon help it lean a little more modern feeling in my opinion.

For this card I decided to add some stamping to the front panels. I started with the same bright green card stock that I used in the first card. After I cut the base, I layed it out flat, face down and masked off the back of my card. I stamped the two front flaps in Wplus9 White pigment ink with a polka-dot background cling stamp.

I pulled out the older Bountiful Blooms die and cut out several flowers and leaves in purple, yellow, white and green. I then just had fun layer up different elements to create some custom floral clusters and adhered them to a yellow hexagon cut with the Welcome Die.

I made sure to use white through out the card to offset all of the color and help give the eyes a little “rest” to prevent the colors from becoming to garish. The way a color visually appears is greatly affected by the surrounding colors. Adding white throughout helps to keep the colors crisp and fresh looking.

I’m having a hard time choosing my favorite today as there are certain things that I love about each. What about you? I’d love to know if you have a favorite.
