Hand Stitching with Caly Person

This is Caly and I’m so excited to be a guest for Wplus9 today!  I’m playing with some Wplus9 exclusive stitching dies today.  I’ve had my eyes on these for a while but kept telling myself there’s no time to play.  So, needless to say, I took this guest opportunity to play with these fun dies and I’m thrilled to share them with you!

My first card uses the Needle Point Hearts die set.  I selected a few colors from my DMC 5 thread to do a rainbow pattern using the chain stitch.  If you need a good tutorial for how to do this – Jennifer McGuire recently put out a great video tutorial!

Instead of working in the same direction going from one end to another, I broke it up by starting the chain at the bottom and only working to the center first on the left, then starting at the bottom again and working to the center on the right.  That way, the chain goes up on both sides and meets in the middle.

After stitching, I stamped my sentiment using the So Very stamp set.  I stamped the large sentiment on black cardstock and embossed it using white embossing powder.  Then I used the So Very Die to die cut around the word – this highlights the sentiment perfectly for placement beneath my Needle Point Heart.

Breaking up the direction of your stitching is a small detail with big impact.

My second card  uses the Plush Friends Panda Die as well as the Sweet On You Die.  I’ve never stitched a plush critter before so I was really excited about this one!  I decided I wanted him on a card, so instead of creating a felt backing, I did the backing with a coordinating cardstock color (white) to be able to adhere him to a card base.

I began by die-cutting all the panda pieces and ice cream pieces using various colors of felt; black and white for the panda and pink and brown for the ice cream. After cutting them out of felt, I also cut the pieces again a second time using heavy cardstock. I used black cardstock for the black parts of the panda and white cardstock for everything else.

I began stitching around the panda with white ink using a simple back stitch and added colorful sprinkles to the ice cream as well as adding some brown thread to the waffle cone. I also die-cut the Sweet On You Die sentiment twice and adhered them together for strength and dimension.

To give the ice cream and panda a bit of color, I used Distress Markers in Spun Sugar and Worn Lipstick to add some dimension.  I applied the color directly where I wanted it, then blended it out as best I could with a water brush.  Yes, you can color on felt!  Before adhering it all together, I ink-blended my card panel with Peacock Feathers Distress Oxide Ink and sprayed it with some water for texture.

I really hope you enjoyed these fun stitching projects!  Don’t forget that Wplus9 has a great exclusive selection of these types of dies and will add lots of fun to your day!  Thank you so much for joining me!
