Clean & Modern Shaker Card
I love the idea of shaker cards, but often have a hard time pairing this technique up with my personal style. I tend to lean toward classic and/or clean and modern designs. Although I often force myself to venture well outside of that comfort zone, sometimes I just incorporate small bits of another style into my personal style.
Speaking of small bits, today’s shaker card was created using Martha Stewart Microbeads for the shaker element. These pair up perfectly with the clean and modern design. I picked these up quite a few years ago and they are discontinued, but you can substitute with your favorite brand of microbeads.
I started by applying Stick It Adhesive to the back of a piece of fun foam and die cut the fun foam using the Ironworks Background Die. I removed the adhesive release paper and adhered it to an A2 cardbase.
I filled each compartment with microbeads in ROYGBIV order. I didn’t have true yellow microbeads, so I substituted gold, and I think it works alright. Trying to be precise, I created a little funnel from paper to pour the beads. Overall, it worked, a still few “jumped” here and there, but not too badly.
I then applied Stick It to the front and back of white card stock and die cut it using the Ironworks Background Die. I removed the release paper from the front and adhered an A2 piece of Grafix Dura-lar Acetate Alternative to the front, and then removed the release paper from the back and adhered it to the shaker base. To finish off the shaker, I adhered one more Ironworks Background die cut to the very front on top of the acetate.
For the sentiment, I used the “thanks” from the Welcome Die ink blended with Spiced Marmalade Distress Oxide Ink. I added a little sub sentiment from the Welcome Wreath stamp set heat embossed in white onto white card stock inked with Fossilized Amber Distress Oxide Ink.
I love the way it turned out, but I really love the way it sounds. If you’ve ever heard a rain stick, that is exactly what it sounds like!
Now, I know shaker cards aren’t for everyone, they can take some patience. But the aesthetic of that rainbow with the Ironworks Background Die is so striking…I thought I’d share another version with an easy ink blended background.
For the background, I ink blended Festive Berries, Spiced Marmalade, Squeezed Lemonade, Twisted Citron and Peacock Feathers Distress Inks onto Tim Holtz Distress Watercolor card stock. I added plenty of water to move and distress the ink, creating a more watery flowing look.
I die cut two white panels using the Ironworks Background and adhered them over the background, one on top of the other. For the sentiment, I used the Happy Birthday Die, the Birthday Wishes stamp stamp set and the Basic Banners Die.
I ink blended a gradient of Peacock Feathers Distress Ink onto a piece of card stock and die cut “birthday” from the lighter portion that faded into white and the banner from the heavier dark portion of the gradient. A few jewels from Studio Katia finished off the card.
I love both versions and hope you enjoyed them as well! Thanks for stopping by!
