VIDEO: 2 Marker Blending with Copics

Hello friends, I’ve got a couple of gorgeous cards to share with you today along with a video. Would you believe me if I told you that you don’t need 4 or 5 shades of Copic Markers to get a good blend AND depth? Well, you don’t…and here’s the proof!

What???? Each element on these cards uses just two markers of each color, a light and a dark. Very rarely, I enlisted the tiniest bit of a third color, but that was mainly in the center of the flowers. Be sure to watch the video to see what I mean.

The body of the bird was colored with E30 and E23, that’s it. I used W5 and Black for his eye and beak. The key is to use the lighter color to blend and pull out the darker color. Because Copics are translucent, I was able to make several passes, building up the depth of color where needed.

The Cosmo flower petals were colored with RV10 and RV14, and for the centers I used Y08, YR04, E07 and a touch of RV99. The leaves were colored with YG93 and G99. You can see that I was still able to get a good amount of color depth and shade variation with very few markers. I go into detail in the video, so be sure to check it out if you want to learn more. Showing is definitely easier than telling in this case.

I used the exact same technique for a second card. I had demonstrated the technique in a Live on Facebook, so I just finished the demo piece out. Both cards use the large floral images from the Flora & Fauna 3 stamp set. I stamped them in Antique Linen Distress Ink on Simon Say’s Stamp 120# cardstock.

I really love the way these turned out and I didn’t want to do too much to distract from the gorgeous imagery. I decided a little elegant hot foil stamping would be the perfect finishing touch.

I used the Splatter Sentiments Hot Foil stamps from Spellbinders to add the bold frame around the outer edge as well as the large script sentiments. Admittedly, I had a little trouble with under foiling on the frame. But, with some trial and error on scratch paper, I was able to determine how to improve that for next time. The thicker paper requires a bit of a thinner shim combo to prevent over foiling, and the large outer frame needs to be placed at an angle when when going through the die cutting machine to maximize the time under the rollers for even pressure to prevent under foiling. Now I know for future projects.
