Colorful Florals on A Dark Background for Extra Drama

Nothing is quite as striking as a gorgeous bouquet of flowers on a deep dark background. And there are few mediums that will give you the vibrancy of color that Copic Markers will.

The problem is that Copic Markers are a transparent medium, so coloring on dark cardstock is a no-go. Luckily, that’s where cutting dies come to the rescue!

To create this gorgeous, all occasion card, I used our Modern Roses, Peonies, and Anemones stamp sets along with their companion dies. I stamped several of the flowers and leaves onto Neenah Solar White cardstock and heat embossed the images with gold embossing powder.

I choose very simple 3-4 color combinations for each element. I didn’t over think it and just start coloring with my Copics. If you’d like to see the images in this card colored in real time, you can watch the Facebook Live replay in our Wplus9 – Encourage Creativity Community on Facebook.

I used the companion dies to die cut each image after I finished coloring. The great thing about this method is that I only cut out my favorite images. So if I messed up on one, my whole card wasn’t ruined, I just didn’t use it!

I camouflaged the edges of my die cuts by coloring them with a marker that matched my cardstock. Super easy, and this little extra step really helps to keep the design clean.

I arranged my florals and adhered them using Gina K Connect glue and foam adhesive. For the sentiment, I decided to keep it simple and heat embossed the “May the Kindness You Spread Keep Returning to You.” sentiment from The Little Things in the same gold embossing powder.

If you haven’t tried this trick, I encourage you to give it a go. It creates a dark and moody background that sets off those vibrant florals beatifully!

Dawn, I have missed your work so so much; you always inspire me to work on coloring, be it water or copies and on card design). I took the watercolor class you taught through On-line Classes and still have cards I made that you taught (can’t bare to send them out).
Seeing this card made my heart smile.

I agree, with Annie, Dawn. I’ve never seen a card more beautiful. The color variations and movement you achieved with the Copics is awesome. You are truly one of a kind as an artist and a person. There is no one quite like you!
