2019 Winter Release: Winter Sparrow

Hello and welcome to our 2019 Winter Release! I’m sneaking in with a fabulous new release that is perfect for using all Winter long. And the best part? One of the the most versatile sets in this release is Winter Sparrow, and I am IN LOVE with these chubby little guys!

I chose to go with a typical “sparrow” color scheme for this card, stamping my birds in Warm Wool, Coconut Husk and Memento Dew Drop in Rich Cocoa.

The large pine branch in the set can be used in multiple orientations and directions. Here, I stamped two in Last Leaf and added a few of the pine cones and floral fillers also included in the set. I kept the lay out quite simple by flanking the birds perched on their pine branches on each side of a panel die cut using the 4 Bar Stitched Rectangles Die.

There are two sentiments included in the set – “Warm Wishes for a Happy Birthday” and “Thinking of You Warms my Heart” – again, perfect for general Winter cards. I chose the birthday sentiment and nestled it between the two birds.

I wanted some dimension, but also wanted a little bit more stability than foam tape would provide for the pine branches. So I simply die cut an extra branch using the Winter Sparrow Companion Die, and adhered directly to the back of each of the stamped branches. This gives them a little more heft, similar to a chipboard weight and adds a little height and dimension while maintaining a flat back – perfect for gluing them to my panel.

I added a bit of white spatter to emulate snow and adhered everything to a white standard A2 card base.

This next card gives me “all the feels”.

The birds look amazing stamped in solid colors, but I wanted to see if I could get creative with my inking to give them more depth. This time I used Distress Oxide inks and a sponge dauber to apply the ink to my stamps. I wanted to create soft blends of color with a more targeted application and this worked perfectly.

I started with Fossilized Amber, avoiding the belly and then applied Frayed Burlap to the edges of the head and tail. I did the same multi inking with the wings and added all of the details with Frayed burlap. I love how using the sponge to apply the ink also gives this fun texture.

I used the same pine branch, but again did a little multi inking and then a bit of WOW! Glittered Embossing Powder in Singing in the Rain. I filled in around the branch with a few flowers and leaves – all included in the set – to create a little nest to nestled the birds into.

I adhered the nest to a label die cut using the Onward & Upward Die and adhered that to a panel stamped with the Wood Planks stamp set in Warm Wool ink. I heat embossed the sentiment from another new set – Most Wonderful – in Liquid Platinum by Ranger.

Everything was adhered to a little larger card base this time. I use a side fold 5 x 6 1/4″ card base. I’ve really been digging this larger format lately.
